Are spaces counted?
Yes by default, because Twitter, SMS, and most platforms count spaces. A secondary "no spaces" figure is also shown.
Why 280 for Twitter and not 140?
Twitter raised the limit to 280 in 2017 for most languages. CJK characters (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) still count differently on X/Twitter.
